The Band's Visit
The seven members of the Alexandria Ceremonial Police Orchestra have traveled from Egypt to play at the opening of an Arab Culture Center in the Israeli city of Petah Tikvah, near Tel Aviv. However, speaking no Hebrew and little English, they find themselves in the remote village of Bet Hatikvah in the middle of the desert. There is no Arab Culture Center, (there is no culture at all according to the local residents), there are no hotels and the center of town is one small cafe. With no bus until morning, these unlikely travelers are forced to camp out in various homes overnight, where tensions rise (it is the Middle East after all), friendships are formed and a little romance blossoms. Under the spell of the desert sky, their lives become intertwined in the most unexpected ways. The Band's Visit celebrates how music and laughter connect us all.
The Band’s Visit stars Tony nominee and Emmy Award winner Tony Shalhoub (Monk) as the grave, heartbreakingly uneasy band conductor, Tewfiq, and Katrina Lenk (Once) as Dina, the gorgeous, earthy owner of the cafe. John Cariani (Something Rotten) leads the rest of the ensemble cast. With music and lyrics by Tony nominee David Yazbek (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels), The Band’s Visit won both the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award and the Outer Critics Circle Award for Off Broadway Best Musical. During its twice-extended Off Broadway run, it was named BEST OF THE YEAR by The New York Times, Deadline, Newsday, New York Post, The Hollywood Reporter, Huffington Post, and The Wall Street Journal, just to name a few.
“My favorite musical of the year by far. The show abounds with signs of new and exciting life in the contemporary American musical! One of the season’s most exquisitely wrought scores. The music takes on a transcendent harmonic shimmer that stops the heart.” Ben Brantley, The New York Times
“So full of heart and so overflowing with integrity — of talent, of skill and of purpose. This perfect jewel of a show is not only deserving of a wider audience but also could not be a better agent of hope in a time desperately in need of it. The Band’s Visit is an intimate musical that delights the ear and tugs at the soul, a show in which little happens and everything changes, possibly even your world view.” Deadline
