Welcome to the jungle – better known as high school! Cady Heron may have grown up on the African savanna, but nothing prepared her for the wild and vicious ways of her strange new home: suburban Illinois. How will this naïve newbie rise to the top of the popularity pecking order? By taking on The Plastics, a trio of popular frenemies led by the calculating but charming Regina George. When Cady devises a plan to end Regina’s reign, she learns that you can’t cross a Queen Bee without getting stung. Mean Girls gets to the hilarious heart of what it means to be a true friend, a worthy nemesis, and above all, a human being.
Based on the cult classic 2004 movie, this ferociously funny new musical was written by Tina Fey (30 Rock) and produced by Saturday Night Live impresario Lorne Michaels. Directed and choreographed by Casey Nicholaw, Broadway’s go-to guy for musical comedy (The Book of Mormon, Something Rotten!), the music is composed by Jeff Richmond, Fey’s husband and frequent musical collaborator on projects including 30 Rock and lyrics written by Nell Benjamin (Legally Blonde).
Currently playing to sold out audiences at the National Theatre in Washington DC during its pre-Broadway tryout, Mean Girls has caught the attention of critics, making it one of the most anticipated shows of the upcoming Broadway season. Our own resident critic, Lenny Shapiro, saw the preview and said “The theater was filled to capacity with teens, tweens and their families, all having a ball. Parents, if you ever wondered what goes on in the high school cafeteria, here’s your chance! Tina Fey’s story captures all the angst, drama, meanness and fun that is High School 2018!”
“With excellent performances from some of Broadway’s hottest up-and-comers, great dance numbers, and flawless set design, this show delivers the goods and leaves audiences deeply satisfied. Oh, and Tina Fey’s contribution? Predictably hilarious. It’s a fair bet that Mean Girls will be a major contender on Broadway this season.” - DC MetroArts
“It’s Taylor Louderman (Kinky Boots, Peter Pan Live) who steals the show, as Regina is wont to do, with a performance that captures the depths of Regina’s evil and the vulnerability that made her that way. In one of the show’s best numbers, “Watch the World Burn,” she rises Elphaba-like from the stage. Being wicked never looked so good.” - BuzzFeed
“A delightful and energetic tuner packed with strong performances, engaging numbers and eye-popping visuals. Mean Girls is most certainly a crowd pleaser.” - Variety
You’ll never look at high school the same again after seeing it through Tina Fey’s eyes!
