Dave: The Musical
Who said politics can’t be funny these days? Certainly not the folks at Arena Stage, who have just announced the world premiere of the new musical, Dave. This show is sure to be as big a sensation as the 1993 Oscar-nominated film on which it is based. After all, Arena knows a hit when they see it, having premiered Dear Evan Hansen before its massively successful Broadway run.
Dave Kovic is a high-school teacher who bears an uncanny resemblance to the philandering and distant President Bill Mitchell. His life is turned upside down when he is recruited by the Secret Service as a momentary stand in for Mitchell. However, things don’t go as planned when the commander in chief falls into a coma under less than “presidential” circumstances. Dave is thrust indefinitely into the Oval Office by the corrupt Chief of Staff as he must find a way to avoid a national scandal and gain the trust and love of the American people...and the First Lady.
"The show offers a hilarious critique of our current political state of affairs but more than anything, it is an invitation to hope and believe again during times when that often feels difficult. It's a reminder of our ideals and the necessity of integrity in both our political actions and our personal relationships. It's about the Dave in all of us, an ordinary citizen who thinks he doesn't matter in the big scheme of things but comes to discover that, with his principles and his passion, he can make a difference in the world.”– Director Tina Landau
