Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art
Thursday, October 13 - Sunday, October 16, 2016
Join Diversions on our second exciting trip to visit the
world-renowned Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville and the William J. Clinton Presidential Library & Museum in Little Rock. Our homes away from home will be the cutting edge boutique hotel, the “21c Museum Hotel” in Bentonville and the Little Rock Marriott, located along the historic Riverfront.
Thursday, October 13
We depart from Baltimore on a direct Southwest flight to Kansas City . Upon arrival, we’ll have some time to pick up lunch in the airport before our 3 hour drive to Bentonville. En route, a marvelous film will be shared entitled “The Inside World of Walmart Billionaire Alice Walton, America’s Richest Art Collector”. Alice donated over $317 million to build her museum and continues to spend a lot and fast!
The fabulous 21C Museum Hotel is our home for two nights. After freshening up, we’ll get our first glimpse of Crystal Bridges. The stunning architecture of the 217,000 square foot museum, designed by the renowned Moshe Safdie (Coldspring New Town, Baltimore; Yad Vashem Holocaust History Museum), comprised of eight pavilions surrounded by ponds, dams and bridges will take your breath away. We’ll enjoy dinner at the museum’s Eleven Restaurant with gorgeous views of the surrounding landscape. (D)
Friday, October 14
This morning, don’t pass up the opportunity to see where Sam Walton started Walmart and to learn about his humble beginnings. In 1950, Sam opened his first 5 & 10 store on the town square in Bentonville having no idea that he’d planted the seeds for what would become the world’s largest retailer with over 11,000 stores, in 11 countries, employing 2.2 million. Today that store with the old floorboards, tin ceiling as well as toys, candy and books from that era is the site of the Walmart Museum which also includes an interactive exhibit on the Walton family. See Sam’s office just as he left it and his pick-up truck, complete with dent and scratches. As he said, you can’t haul your dogs around in a Rolls Royce!
At 11:00am, we’ll meet our docents at Crystal Bridges for a highlight tour of the permanent collection and we’ll visit the newly relocated rare Frank Lloyd Wright’s meticulously restored Bachman-Wilson home. After lunch on your own at the museum, we’ve arranged for a private architectural tour of this magnificent building.
Later in the afternoon, we’ll depart for Thorncrown Chapel, another architectural masterpiece just one hour from Bentonville. Located in Eureka Springs in a woodland setting, this spectacular wooden structure contains 425 windows and over 6,000 square feet of glass. The chapel's simple design and majestic beauty combine to make it what critics have called "one of the finest religious spaces of modern times."
Our day ends in style at our private dinner party at 21C prepared under the direction of the Rising Star Chef Matthew McClure, a semifinalist for the 2014 James Beard Foundation Restaurant and Chef Awards in the “Best Chef: South.” (BD)
Saturday, October 15
Breakfast will be enjoyed during our 3 hour drive to Little Rock. As soon as we arrive, we’ll begin our private highlights tour which will include the Court House where Clinton announced his presidency and Central High School where the now famous Little Rock 9 took the first steps in integrating schools in 1957. A rarely given private tour by the principal of the school has been arranged just for us.
Next up, we'll head to the Clinton Presidential Center which houses the Clinton Library and the School of Public Service, the only school of its kind in the world. After our group lunch at Forty-Two, the center's award-winning restaurant, we'll be given a private tour of the Library by the Dean of Students of the school. Step into a replica of the Oval Office (look for the blue Play-Doh “Dad” on the desk, the dog drink coaster, and the family pictures), view the childhood drawings and, of course, some trademark saxophones, hear the history of Clinton’s life before becoming President, during his terms in office, as well as his post-presidential work and marvel at the staggering architecture, rich with views both inside and out.
Freshen up at the hotel before a special dinner at the home of Chris Olsen, a nationally known home and garden guru, designer, author, TV personality and public speaker. This evening will knock your socks off! (BLD)
Sunday, October 16
After an early breakfast, we’ll depart for the Memphis airport and our 11:05am nonstop flight back to Baltimore. We’ll arrive at BWI at 2:10 pm. (B)
