One of our favorites, Billy Elliot will once again be dancing his way into our hearts this fall at Signature Theatre in Arlington, VA. This spectacular show, with all its heart, humor and passion, won 10 Tony Awards including Best Musical and was named Time Magazine’s Best Musical of the Decade.
Set in a northern English mining town against the background of the 1984 miners' strike, Billy Elliot is the inspirational story of a young boy's struggle against the odds to make his wish come true. 11 year old Billy comes from a family of coal miners, but dreams of becoming a ballet dancer, even though his father wants him to box. Follow Billy's journey as he stumbles out of the boxing ring and into a ballet class, and discovers a passion for dance that inspires and changes his family, his community and his life forever. It’s a coming-of-age story as Billy embarks on a journey of self-discovery in the world of picket lines, cultural stereotypes, family crises and a headstrong ballet teacher.
Based on the international hit film, and featuring a dynamic score by music legend Elton John, the musical is a celebration of dance: its lure, its excitement, its wonder, its surprises, and the discovery of the self that it demands.
"Your inner dancer is calling. Its voice, sweet but tough and insistent, pulses in every molecule of Billy Elliot, demanding that you wake up sleeping fantasies of slipping on tap or ballet shoes and soaring across a stage. Few people may have the gift of this show’s title character, a coal miner’s son in northern England who discovers he was born to pirouette. But the seductive, smashingly realized premise of this musical is that everybody has the urge. " Bill Brantley, The New York Times
