A Chorus Line
Do you remember the joy you felt the first time you saw A Chorus Line? The tears, the laughter, the standing ovations? It’s been 43 years since this musical tour de force opened on Broadway and now, it’s returning for just 6 performances at New York City Center this fall. Whether you’ve seen it once or can sing the whole soundtrack or are part of a new generation eager to experience this singular sensation for the first time, this is one trip you do not want to miss. A joyous celebration of dance and musical theater, A Chorus Line is the ultimate tribute to the life of the Broadway dancer ran for 6,137 performances, becoming the longest-running production in Broadway history until surpassed by Cats in 1997. An unprecedented box office and critical hit, it received twelve Tony Award nominations, winning nine—in addition to the 1976 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Not seen on Broadway since a 2006 revival, this production is sure to be the hottest ticket of the season.
A Chorus Line brilliantly evokes both the glamour and grind of showbiz, and is the musical for everyone who's ever had a dream and put it all on the line. Set during the final auditions for a Broadway musical, this audition is the chance of a lifetime for 17 dancers and what they’ve been working their whole lives for. Always relegated to the back of the stage, they are moved up front and center stage to explore their inner lives and poignant ambitions to be a professional Broadway dancer. The show features one powerhouse number after another. Memorable musical numbers by Marvin Hamlisch include “What I Did for Love, “One,” “I Can Do That,” “At the Ballet,” “The Music and the Mirror,” and “I Hope I Get It.” A brilliantly complex fusion of song, dance, and compellingly authentic drama, A Chorus Line has earned unanimous praise as one of the true masterpieces of live theater.
The creative team for this City Center production of A Chorus Line is led by Bob Avian (original co-choreographer) and Baayork Lee (Connie, original cast). The show is the Annual Gala Presentation during City Center’s 75th Anniversary Season. We are still swooning over The Red Shoes and the magnificent ceilings and décor of this gem of a theater.
The iconic songs. The legendary dances. The universal theme of never giving up. A Chorus Line, simultaneously touching, heartbreaking, funny and inspiring, will haunt you long after you leave the theater. Enjoy the passion, the conflict, the music and the energy of this Tony Award winning hit! We’ve saved a seat for you.
